The Benefits of Proper Posture and How to Get Your Body to Adapt

If you are like the majority of people, then you have some form of poor posture. Whether it’s how you sit or stand, improper posture could be doing some major damage to your body in the long run. If you still aren’t convinced to stand more upright, then let’s talk about the many benefits associated with having an aligned body.

  1. Prevents backache and pain in the muscles. Having back pain can prevent you from doing the things that you like to do and depending on your level of pain, you may have trouble simply getting out of bed in the morning. So many back pain complaints are the result of poor posture, which can be a simple fix with a few exercises and adjustments.

  2. Less fatigue. When you have bad posture, your entire body has to work harder to maintain your incorrect form, which naturally results in unnecessary fatigue that will ultimately deter you from doing the things that you love in life. Imagine not being able to keep up with the grandkids, simply because you haven’t been sitting or standing properly?

  3. Helps decrease the wear and tear of joints. Over time, this depletion of the joints will lead to osteoarthritis, which is also known as degenerative joint disease or degenerative arthritis. When a patient has osteoarthritis, the cartilage that covers the end of each bone is broken down and without the gliding surface of the smooth layer of cartilage, the patient experiences pain and a lack of motion.

  4. A look of confidence. When we are hunched over and in pain, we aren’t presenting our best face to the world and others will perceive us as lacking confidence, simply based on the way we are standing. It’s amazing what standing and sitting upright will do for your appearance.

  5. Prevents spine from becoming settled in atypical positions. While you may not feel any ill-effects immediately after you sit or stand with poor posture, over time your spine will take the brunt of these bad habits. When we display poor posture, additional stress is placed on the spine, which can lead to back issues resulting from problems with the discs, joints, and muscles. 

Americans spend insane amounts of money trying to avoid back and neck pain every year, and in most cases, it’s a simple fix that involves a few adjustments to the positions that you’ve gotten so used to. Bad posture is a bad habit, with a little work and mental practice, bad habits are reversible.
