Does the Atkins diet work long term?

The market is saturated with different diets and now that we rely on the internet for most of our information, we are bombarded with new eating rituals every time we open up our laptops. Over the years, there have been a variety of diets, focused on a several different things. Back in the 80s, exercise gurus urged us to stuff our faces with carbs, holding onto the false truth that low-fat bagels would rid us of our excess curves and give us the energy we needed to get through an aerobics class infused with bounces and grapevines.

More recently, nutritionists have adopted the opposite approach to weight loss and there has been an influx of low-carb diets. While they have proven to promote weight loss and even improve some health issues, the benefits of a high protein diet are typically short-term. Here are a few of the most famed ones, and the ups and downs that go along with them.

Atkins Diet. Originally promoted by Dr. Robert C. Atkins himself, this diet was the result of a best-selling book published in 1972. Since then, like any other strict food plan, this diet has had its ups and downs and has been tested out by health experts and perpetual dieters around the world. The first major critique of this diet is the fact that it is high in saturated fat content. While that seemed to be alarming at first, the rise in this type of fat contributes to good cholesterol, improvements in blood sugar and triglycerides. The main reason why high protein diets work so well and so quickly is due to the fact that protein is more filling and is a natural way of reducing the appetite.

The tricky thing about the Atkins Diet is that it requires you to adopt a strict eating regimen, broken up into a series of phases. Not everyone wants to put so much effort into thinking about the tiny details of what they can and can’t eat. It’s a lot simpler to just cut out one particular food group as a whole, instead of certain items in a particular food group. Unlike Dr. Restivo’s supportive approach to weight loss, the Atkins Diet leaves the participant fending for themselves on an island all alone. In addition, this particular diet was said to exacerbate kidney problems in participants, as they weren’t under the supervision of a doctor while altering their meal plan.
