Summer to Fall: Tips on How to Transition Seasons

Transitioning from one season to the next can be challenging, but there is definitely some excitement in the air with the start of each new seasonal juncture. If you’re like most people, your summer is filled with vacations, BBQ’s, and fun in the sun, so naturally, when September rolls around, it can come with a bit of mourning. But, we have some tips for conquering the transition and embracing the sometimes chaotic moments of a new routine. Like most things in life, the key to success is supporting and nurturing yourself through times of change.

  1. Create peace. With a new school year in full swing, it may feel like you’re are rushing from one drop-off to the next, while trying to sign off on paperwork and juggle the many activities that your children or grandchildren are participating in. The key to succeeding during the seasonal shift is to make a cozy home base for yourself, where you can cultivate some stillness amongst all the madness. This is the season of staying in and creating a space for yourself that promotes peace. Instead of watching TV during your down time…pray, write or practice gentle stretching exercises.

  2. Develop rhythm in your routine. Balance is achieved when we commit to a schedule and as a result, you will feel better both mentally and physically. During times of transition we need additional rest to adjust to the changing season, so it’s best to go to bed early and rise early and eat your meals at the same time every day. Whatever you do, never skip meals, as this is the time to nourish your body and prepare for the seasons that lie ahead.

  3. Pamper your skin. All seasonal changes result in physical changes. With fall, our skin tends to get dry, which means that it requires a bit more TLC than it does during the other seasons. Try a daily self-massage with warming sesame oil to dilate the skin surface, move around toxins, and keep things moving. Daily self-care rituals like this will ensure that you are taking charge of your health and preparing yourself for winter’s harsh weather.

  4. Cleanse your closet. There is something to be said about ridding your life of unnecessary items, and there is no better time to do that than before a change in season. While it may be hard to part with some of your favorite past items, if you haven’t worn that shirt or pair of pants for a year, then it’s time to donate it to someone who can get some good use out of it.

  5. Prepare some fall meals. While some may have a hard time parting with outdoor grilling, others will naturally embrace fall meals. Instead of firing up the grill for your chicken and fish, you just might have some fun experimenting with some new baked chicken or fish recipes and what better time to embrace fall’s many bountiful fruits and veggies.
