10 Reasons To Choose Organic Foods

Now that you have a bit of background on the differences between organic and non-organic food choices, let’s take it a step further and discuss the top ten arguments that side with the fans of organic and why opting for organic may be the choice for you. Here are ten reasons why you will want to hit the pesticide-free aisles in your local grocery stores…

The health factors. As we’ve discussed in the previous post, there are a lot of reasons why organic food products are more beneficial to our health than the non-organic options. One of those reasons is a healthier community. When food is grown organically, there is less likelihood of toxins permeating the surrounding air, soil and water. As a result, the farmers who grow these products, aren’t as exposed to the pesticides and herbicides that non-organic farmers use. In addition, there is less transportation cost and pollution if those products are purchased at the market where they are grown.

No GMOs. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are those that have been altered by way of genetic engineering techniques. Organic farmers have made a promise that they do not genetically modify their products, and in turn other harmful chemicals such as Round Up or Agent Orange are also not used. In some sense, by buying organic, it’s a way for shoppers to take a stand against the large corporations that thrive on polluting the world’s fields and foods.

Promotes biodiversity. The herbicides and pesticides that are used in the non-organic industry don’t investigate the differences between good and bad bugs. This is an issue for biodiversity and instead of supporting the pollinators that fertilize plants, these products kill them off, lessening the promotion of biodiversity.

More nutrients. An added bonus of choosing organic is the simple fact that the nutrient content in organic products far outweighs those in non-organic products. Organic products are straight from the source of nature and get their nutrients from the healthy and rich dirt. When the dirt is healthy, there is no reason why the farmer would use fertilizers, however; non-organic crops need to get their nutrients from synthetic fertilizers made from fossil fuels. This is the result of years spent not replenishing the soil with organic matter, and the crops end up growing from the same fuels that make our cars run.

Free growth of super strains. When we spray chemicals in an attempt to kill off bugs, we actually end up promoting more growth, as nature has a way of adapting, and these crops get used to conquering the toxins that are made to kill them. Over time these toxins become ineffective and the pests and plants work harder to overcome.
