Like all things in life, the best thing you can do for success, is to be prepared. This proves to be true for anything from making a meal to prepping for surgery. With 2019 right around the corner, you may have a big surgery scheduled, and we want to share some tips on how to be both mentally and physically prepped whether you are dealing with the most basic to the most extreme surgery around.
1. Stay hydrated. Drinking water benefits us on so many levels. Not only is it important to flush out toxins on a regular basis, it’s especially important to rid your body of unhealthy toxins and boosts your immune system during the days before surgery. When you undergo surgery, you will be more exposed to germs and the stress of it will cause your immune system to naturally drop, so it’s exceptionally important to drink more than enough water to keep things moving and ridding your body of the bad. The goal is to drink at least half your body weight in water, and more if you feel like you are coming down with an illness.
2. Avoid hair removal. Leave the waxing and shaving up to the doctors at the hospital because the last thing you want to do is cut your skin, as that could increase your chances of getting an infection. Depending on the surgery, the staff at the hospital may have to shave or use special clippers in specific areas to ensure they have easy access to the necessary body parts involved.
3. Use food as fuel. Food is meant to be consumed for the purpose of healing and generating energy, so that your body can repair wounds, organs, and muscles. Prior to surgery, you’ll want to gas-up on good food and veer away from junk like sugar and unnecessary fats. A few foods that are known for their healing powers are spinach, bok choy, kale, green beans, and parsley, so feel free to load up on these greens for a good recovery. Good fats found in fish are packed with Omega-3’s which are beneficial in lowering blood pressure, something that may be on the rise prior to a stressful surgery.
4. Practice makes perfect. Your doctor will likely give you a few exercises to do after your surgery, which will get you back to moving efficiently and painlessly as quickly as possible. Before your surgery, you need to practice these exercises so that you become accustomed to the movement.
