Most doctors and fitness professionals will tell you that walking is a wonderful way to both lose weight and keep you energized, however; it’s other benefits that often get overlooked. Not only is walking easy on the joints, but daily walks can reduce the risk of stroke by 30 percent. Not to mention the fact that it can help prevent high blood pressure, type two diabetes, and heart disease. If you aren’t convinced that a daily walk will do you good, maybe the fact that it works as a mood booster will get you up and moving. Here are a few more follow-up tips for building and following a walking routine.

Form is key. You’ve been walking your whole life right? So, this will be a pretty simple thing to grasp…lace up the sneakers and head out for a 30-minute stroll, however; when it comes to walking for exercise, it’s important that you have proper form so you get the most out of your daily tread. Remember to keep your head up, your buttocks tucked and always have your arms swinging above the waist. While leisurely strolls may feel good for your mood, you really need to put some pep in your step and adopt proper form to truly benefit from all that walking has to offer.

Stretch. We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again…stretching before and after exercise helps prevent injury. Instead of thinking about how and why to stretch, just do it. Soon you will wonder how your survived without lengthening your muscles and warming them up before an exercise session.

Be consistent. Like most challenges in life, consistency is crucial. Instead of just fitting in your walks when you can, it’s important that you schedule your walk into your everyday life. These daily walks will be a priority and not pushed aside when something better comes along. All it takes is 30 minutes a day. If you have a life that is jam-packed with commitments, start putting your daily walk on your calendar so you are certain it is factored into your day. Being sporadic about fitness has never gotten anyone anywhere and it’s essential to adopt it as a regular habit. If you are the type of person that works well under pressure, you might benefit from having a walking buddy who keeps you accountable and celebrates the little successes along the way. Now, before you change your mind, lace up and head out for your daily walk.
