In a previous post we received some basics about acupuncture, the popular holistic approach to healing. In today’s post we are going to dive a little deeper and learn about the various techniques that acupuncturists use during a session, and some of the many ailments that these techniques have proven to help.

Cupping. In this technique, glass cups are placed on the skin in a way that allows for a sufficient suctioning effect. The reason for this is to encourage the flow of qi and blood, after it has been stagnant for too long.

Laser acupuncture. This may be a good option for those who are wary of needles. Still offering stimulation of the definitive points, a laser with non-thermal irradiation is used instead of the needles.

Electroacupuncture. For added stimulation, an electrical tool is attached to a few of the needles, allowing a current to arouse the needles throughout the treatment.

Moxibustion. Also known as moxa, this technique requires the use of dried herb sticks that are heated and held close to the needles, in order to provide extra stimulation.

Herbs. In an attempt to initiate more stimulation, herbs in the form of pills, tea and capsules may be given to a patient of acupuncture.

There are a wide variety of benefits that are to be had from this holistic approach to healing, and here are the most talked about…

Migraines and Headaches. Whether it is a tension headache or a migraine, research has shown that by incorporating acupuncture into treatment options, the frequency of symptoms is reduced more so than in patients who took the standard pain medications.

Infertility. By increasing blood flow to the reproductive organs and offering balance in the endocrine system, acupuncture has been proven to increase a woman’s chance of getting pregnant. The stimulation of blood flow also aids in stress reduction, which can also help move a pregnancy along.

Back pain. The low back particularly, is a major source of pain for many men and women. This area of the body is susceptible to pain and injury because it is typically the section of the body where we twist and bend, which can cause muscle fibers to tear and over-stretch, and in turn, result in inflammation. The blood flow that is gained from acupuncture, allows for healing and pain relief.

Osteoarthritis. Also known as degenerative arthritis and joint disease, osteoarthritis is very common in men and women over 60 years of age. By stimulating the qi to the arthritic areas of the body, natural pain-fighting endorphins are released, aiding in pain relief.
