Tips for Staying Healthy on Vacation

Going on vacation can be a major challenge when you are trying to stick with a specific meal plan and it doesn’t help that our culture associates vacationing with eating unhealthy foods and drinking alcohol while lounging on the beach. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Just because you take a break from work, doesn’t mean you have to take a break from sticking to your health goals.

There are a few important tips that you’ll need to follow if you want to overcome the temptations at destination hot spots.

First and foremost…planning is key. If you are driving to your vacation haven, it’s fairly easy to pre-make approved meals, but if you are flying, the best thing you can do is research the local grocery stores and restaurants. Plan to take a trip to the nearby grocer to stock up on the ingredients for your go-to dishes. And of course be sure to get the necessities, like berries, fruits, spinach, eggs, meat, chicken and fish. If you have no choice but to rely on the food served at the destination, then you are going to have to be crystal clear about what you want and make sure that your server is well aware of your request. Oftentimes there are hidden ingredients in restaurant dishes, but you are entitled to be specific about what you want to put in your body.

Pack a cooler that you can take with you while you’re out sight seeing. Since a lot of the food in the plan needs to stay fresh, it’s a good idea to invest in a good travel cooler so you can stay on track. This can be an added activity for the family and you can turn mealtime into an outdoor picnic.

Staying hydrated while on vacation is an essential part of being healthy and feeling good. Chances are, you are going to a destination that is sunny and warm, which means your body will need even more water to maintain proper function. If you are flying to your destination it’s even more important to hydrate because the air in the plane cabin lacks humidity, leaving your eyes and throat dry and itchy.
